Linux Mint Stuck on Black Screen After Idle

Linux Mint 20, on Acer Aspire E5-576 laptop.

For the last few weeks, I've had a problem with suspending my laptop. Maybe half the time, instead of suspending as normal, the screen goes black, but the power indicator remains as though it were still active instead of blinking like it should. After that, it won't respond to any input, and the only way to return to normal is to hold down the power button until it forces a shutdown. I know that's terrible for the filesystem, so I'm looking to find a solution.
Oddly, this also happens—again, only sometimes—after long periods of inactivity without trying to suspend it. After maybe ~30-40 minutes without input, the screen goes black and enters the same state. Looking through Preferences, it's not set to auto-suspend at all, just lock the screen and go dark after a while, so I'm not sure what's causing that.

All this only started after I upgraded from 19 "Tara" to 20 "Ulyana". Before that, suspending and resuming always worked as normal. I'm not sure which package triggered the change, but posts about similar problems I have found all seem to tie back to the kernel itself. So I suppose there, but I don't know what part of that is the problem, let alone how to fix it.

What I have tried:

  • Normal keyboard or mouse usage: No response. In a normal suspend, that would wake it up, but here the screen remains black.
  • Switching to a tty/virtual console: Unavailable. The screen remains black when I try, and trying to log in blind in case the system is still running without displaying it seems to fail.
  • SysRq elephants: No response. Any combination of SysRq keys I have tried has done nothing, between the full elephants sequence and just shutting down outright; During normal usage, the SysRq codes work as expected, and /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq has been set to 1, so everything is enabled.
  • SSHing into it to check the status: Fails. Trying to connect just hangs midway until it times out.
  • Updating the kernel: No change. I went from 5.4.0-54 to 5.8.0-34, but the problem still occurs at about the same rate.

I've also checked /var/log/syslog, which turned up some useful info. After one failed suspend, I thought to check the log file to see what I could glean. The last lines written before the reboot are as follows:

Code: Select all

            Jan 6 15:15:56 <redacted> systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep. Jan 6 15:15:56 <redacted> systemd[1]: Starting Suspend... Jan 6 15:15:56 <redacted> wpa_supplicant[962]: nl80211: deinit ifname=p2p-dev-wlp2s0 disabled_11b_rates=0 Jan 6 15:15:56 <redacted> kernel: [ 3139.245684] PM: suspend entry (deep) Jan 6 15:15:56 <redacted> systemd-sleep[10100]: Suspending system...

Compare this to the last lines after a successful suspend:

Code: Select all

            Jan 7 13:11:46 <redacted> systemd-sleep[7591]: Suspending system... Jan 7 13:11:46 <redacted> kernel: [ 3761.240729] PM: suspend entry (deep) Jan 7 13:11:46 <redacted> wpa_supplicant[984]: nl80211: deinit ifname=wlp2s0 disabled_11b_rates=0 Jan 7 13:11:46 <redacted> kernel: [ 3761.568860] Filesystems sync: 0.328 seconds

The filesystems sync line that's missing in the failed suspend log seems like useful information, but I''m afraid I don't know what to do with it or what it implies.

I have been unable to find any consistent factor that might be causing it. it more or less happens at random.

I appreciate any help you can provide. I hope I've given enough information to work with, but I can provide more if needed. Thank you!
